Glossary
Here is a very basic glossary with few words concerning our activity. We suggest those who are interested to know more about the different aspects of cooperation to consult selected books. Go to "Related books".
Africa: Presently the poorest continent. DonationPixel was initially oriented to Asia, but we are now also studying some projects in Africa.
Help: Support given to people, groups or countries in great needs. In cooperation area, we preferably use the word assistance.
Asia: The most populated continent. Development is very unequal. Some countries are relatively developed, when some others are still in a great misery. Also, in some countries, some areas are quite developed when others are still very poor.
Assistance: Act to assist. In cooperation, we can mention often the expression of technical assistance.
Charity: Virtue characterised by generosity, or the act to materialize this generosity. In the area of international cooperation this word is preferably replaced by international cooperation.
Children: They are generally the first victims of poverty. Health can be affected, and basic education does not exist for all.
Cooperation: General term which is related to all kind of help given to developing countries. One mention generally the expression of international cooperation because this assistance comes from foreign countries.
Development: This word means generally “economical development”. The level of development depends of different factors and statistics. In our work, this word more precisely means an activity oriented to higher the standard of living of a community.
Donation (gift): Act to donate. The donation can come from public sector or can be private. In such case, DonationPixel offer to the donor the opportunity to decide how much he will give, to whom he will give, and for which project. The donor must also have some information concerning the follow up of the action.
Donor: Person or group who make a gift for a specific project. We also use the word sponsor.
Education: Formation given specially to youth, and essentially at school. In poor countries this formation is highly affected, and consequently affects all the life of the biggest part of the population.
Hunger: Basic need to eat, but also impossibility to satisfy this need. It is one of the direct and immediate consequences of poverty. The word famine is used when an important proportion of the population of an area is affected by hunger.
Financing: Act to collect money in order to support humanitarian and development projects. It is the objective of DonationPixel.
Generosity: Quality of a person, a group or a country who gives largely to persons or groups in need.
Health: Sanitary condition of a person or a group. Bad health condition of a population could be the consequence of a general poverty, but also a consequence of ignorance or poor information. Reasons of this situation have to be identified in order to ameliorate the situation.
Humanitarian: In cooperation area, this word is used mainly to describe emergency operation to assist victims of war or victims of a natural disaster.
Medical: Medical infrastructures are generally very poor in developing countries. The number of medical doctors is very low, and they cannot face the situation which is generally dramatic. Drugs are too expensive for the biggest part of the population.
Misery: Situation of great poverty of too many population in the third world. Development’s aim is to fight such situation.
NGO: Non Governmental Organization. A lot of these organization were founded these last years. Originally, they were dedicated mainly to humanitarian and development activities. Today, they are also active in the area of human right, environment or protection of different victims of political situation. DonationPixel is not involved in politics, and works only in cooperation and development area.
Partnership: Association of different partners working for the same goal. In our situation, DonationPixel collect money to support a project, and has a selected partner, an NGO, who implement this project in the field.
Poverty: Situation of a person or a having a very low revenue. In several countries, the revenue per capita is not higher than one dollar a day. This poverty has to be eradicate through adequate development activities
Displaced people: Refugees in their own countries. For instance, after a natural disaster.
Philanthropy: This word is not anymore used in cooperation. But it means altruism or disinterested generosity.
Refugee: Person who has to leave its country due to natural disaster or political persecution
School: Lack of schooling is one of the main consequences of the poverty in several countries. Great number of children haven’t any opportunity to go to school. In such cases, it is not enough to build schools, but one has also to insure that good teachers will be able to regularly provide a good and adequate teaching with sufficient material.
Third world: Formerly, group of countries who were not politically linked to western or communist block. Today, it is a general term to define poor or developing countries.
